Abstract

This thesis is entitled: THE ROLE OF THE SPOKESMAN AS A TRADITIONAL COMMUNICATOR IN THE PROPOSALS OF “ANA MAWINE” (A Case Study on the Sumba Diaspora Group in Kupang City). The main problem in this study is How is the Role of the Spokesperson as a Traditional Communicator in the Proposals of “Ana Mawine” in the Sumba diaspora group in Kupang City. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. While the method used is a case study. This study aims to see the role of the spokesperson as a traditional communicator by using the theory of intercultural communication and the theory of cultural representation. In this study there are four indicator structures, namely Functional, Representative, Symbolic, Mediative. The results of this study indicate that the role of the spokesperson in the proposals of “ana mawine” in the Sumba diaspora group in Kupang City is very important in determining the success of the traditional process, because the spokesperson functions to convey the intention of the proposal as well as the representation of the family being represented. Through traditional communication skills, the spokesperson is able to maintain the symbolic meaning as a representative of the family and become a mediator in preventing potential conflicts between families. Furthermore, in document studies, the author found differences in the engagement ceremonies in Sumba and Kupang, starting with the modified traditional poetry text and the determination of the belis. Future research is expected to conduct direct observations to strengthen the research data and conduct research on Sumbanese diaspora groups in other cities to compare traditional communication practices in different social settings.
