Abstract

This research is entitled “A Study on the Ability in Writing Descriptive Text of EFL Students in the Academic Year 2023/2024.” The objectives of this study were (1) to know the students’ ability in writing descriptive text and (2) to find out the difficulties faced by the eighth-grade students of SMP Kristen 1 Amanuban Barat in writing descriptive text. The subjects of this research were 11 students of class VIII-A. The study focused on analyzing the descriptive texts written by these students. The sample of this research was all 11 students in class VIII-A. The data were collected through a writing test in which the students were asked to abstract describe a picture. This research used a descriptive qualitative design. The students’ writing was analyzed based on three aspects: grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. The researcher also classified the students’ ability into five levels: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. The result showed that the students’ ability in writing descriptive text was at an average level (11.09). The students faced several difficulties, especially in grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. They had limited knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Most of them only knew simple and general words, such as colors and basic objects. Because of this limitation, they had difficulty expressing their ideas clearly. In the vocabulary aspect, many students did not know how to describe the object well and needed a long time to write a simple paragraph. In conclusion, the students had problems in writing descriptive text, especially in vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. Therefore, students are suggested to improve and enrich their vocabulary so they can write descriptive texts better.
