Abstract

Film is a mass communication medium that has the power to represent social reality through symbols and visual signs. One of the social issues frequently portrayed in films is discrimination against women and the forms of resistance carried out in confronting patriarchal systems. This study aims to identify the forms of discrimination against women depicted in the film Women from Rote Island, to analyze the forms of women’s resistance represented in the film, and to understand how members of the Kupang Film Community interpret the symbolism of discrimination and women’s resistance presented in the film. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through film text analysis and in-depth interviews with members of the Kupang Film Community as informants. Data analysis is conducted using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, which includes denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings to reveal the symbolism of discrimination and women’s resistance in the film, as well as reception theory to examine the audience’s process of meaning-making. The results indicate that Women from Rote Island represents discrimination against women through symbols of sexual violence, social stigma, the silencing of women’s voices, and the dominance of patriarchal culture. Meanwhile, women’s resistance is portrayed through the courage of female characters in opposing the culture of silence, maintaining personal dignity, and resisting the injustices they experience. The reception of members of the Kupang Film Community shows that the film is interpreted as a reflection of the social realities faced by women in East Nusa Tenggara, as well as a form of social criticism toward practices of discrimination and gender-based violence. This study suggests that film should be utilized optimally as an educational and reflective communication medium to enhance public awareness of issues related to discrimination and violence against women. In addition, the active involvement of film communities and society is necessary to create critical discussion spaces that encourage changes in attitudes and the development of more equitable understanding toward women.
