Abstract

This study discusses the development of communication technology in the digital era, which has changed patterns of interpersonal interaction, including in long-distance relationships. The purpose of this research is to determine the role of virtual communication as a means of maintaining long-distance relationships in the digital era, particularly among WhatsApp users who are in long-distance relationships (LDR), specifically teenage female couples at Kasih Abadi Dormitory. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted by referring to Social Penetration Theory and Relationship Maintenance Theory to understand the communication process, self-disclosure, and the strategies used by couples in maintaining their relationships.The results of the study show that virtual communication through WhatsApp plays an important role in maintaining long-distance relationships among teenage female couples at Kasih Abadi Dormitory. Communication conducted regularly allows partners to continue sharing stories, feelings, and daily experiences, which creates openness, trust, and comfort in the relationship. Emotional closeness between partners is maintained through a gradual process of self-disclosure. Therefore, LDR couples are advised to maintain the intensity of communication and increase openness so that the relationship can continue to run well. Thus, virtual communication not only functions as a means of exchanging information but also serves as an important medium for building and maintaining the quality of long-distance relationships in the digital era.
