Abstract
Interpersonal communication is an important element in expectancy violations experienced by students who are victims of body shaming in the campus environment, because interactions between individuals serve as the main space where expectations, judgments, and meanings toward communication behavior are formed. The purpose of this study is to identify the forms of expectancy violations in interpersonal communication experienced by students who are victims of body shaming, to understand their communication experiences, and to examine the impact on their comfort and social relationships within the campus environment. The method used is a case study with a descriptive qualitative research design. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The theories used are Expectancy Violation Theory by Judee Burgoon as the main theory, which includes expectations, expectancy violations, and communicator reward valence, as well as Carl Rogers’ Self-Concept Theory as a supporting theory, which includes self -image, ideal self, and self-esteem. The results of the study show that acts of body shaming experienced by students constitute violations of interpersonal communication expectations that should be respectful, supportive, and psychologically safe. Expectancy violations generate emotional responses such as feelings of shame, discomfort, withdrawal from social interactions, and decreased self-confidence. However, not all expectancy violations end negatively. Some expectancy violations lead to positive outcomes, such as increased self-love and improved selfconfidence.
