Abstract
Music learning plays an important role in developing students' skills and creativity. One form of learning that is widely applied in schools is music ensemble activities. In various schools, this activity is generally part of an extracurricular program that aims to develop the ability to play music together. The formulation of the problem in this study includes: (1) how to apply modulation techniques in playing pianica ensembles; (2) how do modulation techniques affect the cohesiveness and stability of tempo in playing pianica ensembles on the song Laskar Pelangi for class X students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang; and (3) what difficulties are experienced by students during the learning process. This study aims to: (1) describe the process of applying modulation techniques in playing pianica ensembles; (2) determine the effect of modulation techniques in maintaining the cohesiveness and tempo of playing pianica ensembles on the song Laskar Pelangi for class X students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang; and (3) identify various difficulties experienced by students during learning pianica ensembles. The study uses a qualitative approach with imitation and drill methods. The research subjects were grade X students. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using qualitative descriptive techniques. The results of the study showed that: (1) the application of modulation techniques in pianica ensemble playing can be carried out well, marked by the students' ability to play the song Laskar Pelangi on two basic notes, namely Do = C and Do = D; (2) students were able to modulate and maintain the compactness of the tempo from the beginning to the end of the game, although as a group there were still obstacles in pressing the keys due to changes in the scale; and (3) students experienced several difficulties during the learning process, especially in understanding the changes in the scale, adjusting the fingering, and maintaining the stability of the tempo and compactness of the game. Changes in the basic notes require higher cognitive readiness and technical skills so that some students require a longer adaptation time. Pedagogically, these difficulties indicate that learning with modulation techniques provides constructive challenges because it is able to encourage the development of thinking skills, motor coordination, and cooperation between students. Thus, learning a music ensemble not only improves the ability to play instruments in groups, but also strengthens musical competence and the value of togetherness among students.
