Abstract

The Hang Kalok traditional ceremony is a ritual of reconciliation with nature performed by the community of Liang Deruk Village as a form of reverence to Mori Jari Agu Dedek (the Almighty Creator) and the natural environment. The Mbata Lamung Wae chant constitutes an integral part of this ritual sequence, functioning as a medium of spiritual communication. The research problems addressed in this study are: (1) How are the stages of the Hang Kalok traditional ceremony carried out in Liang Deruk Village? (2) What are the meanings and functions of the Mbata Lamung Wae chant within the ceremony? This study aims to describe the ritual process of Hang Kalok and to analyse the philosophical meanings and socioreligious functions of the Mbata Lamung Wae chant. This research employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-analytical method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with Tua Golo and Tua Teno (customary elders), and documentation. The data analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the Hang Kalok ceremony is conducted through five main stages: the opening Mbata, family ritual offerings, Tapa Kolo (bamboo rice burning), the climax of the ceremony through the Sanda Lima ritual dance, the peace sacrifice at the Lodok (the center of agricultural land distribution), and the closing ritual at Mbaru Gendang (the traditional house). The Mbata Lamung Wae chant contains denotative, connotative, religious, social, moral-ethical, and cultural meanings. Functionally, this chant serves as a medium of spiritual communication with the Creator, a means of educating the community about environmental preservation values, a binder of social solidarity (mutual cooperation), and a marker of local cultural identity inherited across generations within the Liang Deruk community.
