Abstract
This study aims to analyze recount texts written by tenth-grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus. The objectives of this research are to identify the students’ ability in writing recount texts and to find the common errors they face in terms of structure, language features, and content organization. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected from students’ written texts and analyzed based on the generic structure and linguistic features of recount texts. The findings show that most students were able to apply the basic structure of a recount text, consisting of orientation, events, and re-orientation. However, some texts revealed weaknesses, especially in the use of past tense verbs, sentence coherence, and vocabulary choice. In addition, several students still struggled with grammar accuracy and punctuation. Despite these challenges, the majority of students demonstrated an adequate understanding of recount text characteristics. The study concludes that while students at SMAK Sint Carolus have a general ability to write recount texts, they still need improvement in the text structure, grammatical accuracy, and language use. The results are expected to provide insights for teachers to design more effective writing activities and help students enhance their writing competence in recount texts.
