Abstract

Expansive clay soil is a type of soil that has a high potential for swelling due to changes in moisture content, which often causes construction problems such as reduced bearing capacity and structural damage. This condition is commonly found in various regions of Indonesia, including East Nusa Tenggara. Therefore, soil improvement efforts through stabilization methods are required to enhance the soil’s resistance to the effects of water. This study aims to analyze the water resistance of expansive clay soil stabilized using a combination of rice husk ash and lime, evaluated in terms of swelling value and strength retention based on the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test. The research method consisted of laboratory testing on expansive clay soil with variations of stabilization mixtures using rice husk ash and lime at a total content of 6% of the dry weight of the soil. The tests included soil physical properties testing, Standard Proctor compaction test, unsoaked CBR test, soaked CBR test (4 days of soaking), and swelling test. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of unsoaked and soaked CBR values was conducted to determine the strength retention index as an indicator of the soil’s resistance to water. The results showed that the addition of a combination of rice husk ash and lime significantly reduced the swelling value of expansive clay soil. In addition, the CBR values of the stabilized soil increased under both unsoaked and soaked conditions. The ratio of soaked to unsoaked CBR values indicated an improvement in strength retention, demonstrating that the combined stabilization using rice husk ash and lime is effective in enhancing the soil’s resistance to water. Therefore, the use of rice husk ash and lime as stabilization materials can serve as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative for improving expansive clay soil for construction purposes.
