Abstract
This research aims to describe the types of errors and factors that cause students' errors in solving mathematics story problems in algebra material based on the Newman procedure. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The research was carried out at SMPK Santa Maria Assumpta Kupang with the subjects being three class VII-B students who were selected purposively based on written test results, namely students who showed the most dominant and varied errors. Data collection was carried out through written tests and in-depth interviews, while the validity of the data was tested through technical triangulation by comparing test and interview results. The research results showed that no reading errors were found in all subjects, but four other types of errors were found, namely comprehension errors, transformation errors, coding errors, and final answer coding errors. Misunderstandings occur because students are unable to identify the information being asked and do not understand the relationship between quantities in the question. Transformation errors appear when students construct mathematical models and determine the correct variables. Processing errors occur through unsystematic and incomplete calculation procedures. Coding errors occur when students do not write the final answer according to the context of the question. Factors that cause errors include low understanding of algebra concepts, difficulty using variables, low self-confidence, the habit of rushing, and learning environmental factors. Thus, student errors occur sequentially and are interrelated at each stage of problem solving.
