Abstract

Basic violin playing techniques are the initial skill development stage that a violin player must have. Students of Sta. Familia Sikumana Kupang Private High School are interested in learning the violin but have not been taught violin playing techniques. The problems in this study are (1) how to apply basic violin playing techniques to students, (2) What difficulties are experienced during the learning process, (3) What efforts are made to overcome these difficulties. The purpose of this study is to (1) describe the process of applying basic violin playing techniques, (2) reveal the obstacles faced by students in the learning process, (3) explain the efforts made to overcome these difficulties. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The research method used is field action. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, interviews and documentation. The results of the study showed that the process of implementing basic violin playing techniques was carried out starting from the introduction of body position exercises when playing the violin, how to place the violin on the shoulder, how to hold the bow, and bowing techniques, continued with the process of practicing playing the G, D, and A scales, then practicing playing etudes before entering the song, the final process of this learning is playing the melody of the song Lewo Ro Piring Sina. Each material given always begins with an example by the researcher as a teacher followed by repeated practice, so that students are able to play the violin correctly according to the techniques taught and the songs given. The obstacles experienced by students during the practice process are that students do not have basic knowledge or skills in playing the violin, limited time given, difficulty in applying the correct basic techniques, especially in the bow technique by paying attention to the accuracy of the bow and intonation, the next obstacle is when placing the fingers on the fingerboard to play the scale, the tempo is less stable, time discipline and student attendance. The efforts made included providing comprehensive violin material, repeated practice by observing examples directly from the researcher, direct guidance from the researcher as a teacher, emphasizing time discipline and consistent practice at home. The final results of the practice process showed an increase in students' abilities in applying basic violin playing techniques, although not yet achieving maximum results because it requires a long process and more time to achieve perfect results.
