Abstract
Muistatele is a traditional chant that contains customary verses in the Dawan language, narrating the stages leading to the tof ma’u activity as well as the living conditions of farmers during the farming season. The Muistatele chant is performed in the tof ma’u tradition, which is a communal activity of clearing weeds in the fields after the process of planting rice and corn. This chant is sung without musical accompaniment; however, it blends with the working rhythm of the farmers, creating a harmonious and cooperative working atmosphere. The research problems addressed in this study are: (1) What is the form of the Muistatele chant in the tof ma’u tradition in Sainoni Village, North Bikomi District, North Central Timor Regency? and (2) What is the meaning of the Muistatele chant in the tof ma’u tradition in Sainoni Village, North Bikomi District, North Central Timor Regency? This study aims to examine the form and meaning of the Muistatele chant within the tof ma’u tradition among the people of Sainoni Village. The research method used is a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that the Muistatele chant consists of a single section structured in a question and answer pattern between the nell leader (nait nell) and a group of singers, with a singing pattern composed of nine verses. The chant is asymmetrical because the question and answer sections differ in length. The meaning of the Muistatele chant includes denotative meaning, which describes real activities such as plant growth and farmers working conditions; emotional meaning, reflecting feelings of joy and hope for plant growth as well as anxiety about disturbances that may hinder growth; connotative meaning, in which figurative language is used to depict natural elements and agricultural processes; and cultural meaning, which reflects the community’s beliefs in natural signs, harmonious human environment relationships, and faith in ancestral protection through customary rituals.
