Abstract

The Kelo Ghae song is an important part of the Reba traditional ceremony carried out by the people of Bokua Village, Bajawa District, Ngada Regency. This song is performed collectively by all participants of the Reba ceremony while dancing and moving rhythmically under the leadership of the mosalaki as the traditional leader. The Kelo Ghae song is sung at a core stage before entering the peak of the Reba ceremony and plays an important role as a spiritual link between the community and their ancestors. The Reba ceremony itself is an annual traditional ritual as an expression of gratitude for life, agricultural yields, and respect for ancestors, which has been passed down from generation to generation and is still practiced today. The problems examined in this study are: 1) how the form of presentation of the Kelo Ghae song in the Reba traditional ceremony in Bokua Village, Bajawa District, Ngada Regency; and 2) what are the functions of the Kelo Ghae song in the Reba traditional ceremony in Bokua Village. This study aims to: 1) examine and describe the form of presentation of the Kelo Ghae song in the Reba traditional ceremony in Bokua Village; and 2) identify and explain the functions of the Kelo Ghae song in the Reba traditional ceremony for the local community. This research uses a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method. Data were collected through observation, interviews with traditional elders and community leaders, and documentation. The results of the study show that: 1) the presentation of the Kelo Ghae song is performed in groups, led by the mosalaki, with a relatively fixed rhythmic pattern and synchronized movements following the Reba ceremonial procession without musical instrument accompaniment; and 2) the Kelo Ghae song has religious functions as a means of honoring ancestors, educational functions as a medium for transmitting traditional values to the younger generation, communicative functions as a conveyer of messages and prayers in the ceremony, and moral functions as a reminder of norms and values in social life. The Kelo Ghae song plays an important role in preserving tradition and maintaining the cultural identity of the Bokua Village community.
