Abstract

This study examines the role of the Motaain PLBN traditional market as an arena for post-conflict reconciliation between the former East Timorese community and the citizens of Timor-Leste. Although relations between the two countries have been normalized, community interactions are still influenced by trauma and mistrust resulting from the history of conflict. Using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social practice, this study examines how habitus, various forms of capital, arenas, and social practices shape patterns of interaction that support the restoration of social relations in the border region. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation in the Motaain PLBN market environment. The results show that buying and selling activities, informal communication, and social exchanges encourage the formation of more open, fluid, and cooperative relationships. The traditional market plays a role in transforming post-conflict habitus and strengthening trust and solidarity among residents. Despite obstacles such as capital inequality and residual historical trauma, the traditional market remains a significant social space for building everyday-based reconciliation. These findings confirm that reconciliation does not only occur through formal state mechanisms, but also through social practices that take place organically at the community level.
