Abstract

This thesis is entitled "Interpersonal Communication Between Stepmothers and Stepchildren in Building Family Harmony (A Case Study of Manulai II Village, Alak District, Kupang City)”. Interpersonal communication is an important element in building a harmonious relationship between stepmothers and stepchildren who are not biologically related. The process of self-disclosure is gradual through interpersonal communication and supported by the father's role as a mediator. Therefore, the emotional bond that is formed will be stronger. This study applies Altman and Taylor's Social Penetration Theory to analyze the stages of self-disclosure through interpersonal communication, and Michel Foucault's Power Relations Theory to examine the father's role as a mediator. The approach used is a descriptive qualitative case study. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The results indicate that stepfamily harmony is achieved when the father's role as a mediator is effectively utilized in the initial stages to facilitate selfdisclosure between stepmothers and stepchildren. This gradual interpersonal communication process, supported by the father's mediation, has been shown to form a stable and sustainable emotional bond. This research recommends further research exploring the roles of other family members and external factors that influence the dynamics of stepfamily harmony.
