Abstract

Side friction is one of the main factors affecting traffic performance on urban road sections. Activities such as pedestrian movements, vehicles stopping or parking on the roadway, and vehicles entering and exiting adjacent land uses can reduce road capacity and increase vehicle travel time. This study aims to analyze the impact of side friction on the Service Level Index (SLI) on Timor Raya Road in front of Dutalia Supermarket, Kupang City. The analysis focuses on the characteristics and relationships among side friction, traffic volume, road capacity, and vehicle travel time as indicators of road performance. The analytical method refers to the Indonesian Highway Capacity Guidelines (PKJI) 2023 using a simple linear regression approach. The results show that side friction at the study location is classified as high, with a maximum value reaching 802.8 events/hour occurring on Saturday from 18:00–19:00. The most dominant type of side friction is vehicles entering and exiting adjacent areas, followed by vehicles stopping or parking on the roadway. The highest traffic volume was recorded at 1,329.75 pcu/hour on Monday afternoon, while the maximum effective road capacity reached 3,181.5 pcu/hour, indicating that the road condition is close to its capacity limit in serving traffic flow. Vehicle travel time fluctuated between 17.03 seconds and 22.30 seconds, reflecting reduced traffic flow efficiency during peak periods. The results also indicate a strong correlation between side friction and road performance, as evidenced by simple linear regression analysis with the highest coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.874 during the morning period. Increases in side friction and traffic volume directly raise the Q/(C–Q) ratio, thereby reducing the road service level index. The service level condition falls within category A–B in the morning, decreases to B at midday, and reaches B–C in the afternoon. These findings indicate that side friction is a significant factor contributing to the decline in the performance of the Timor Raya Road section in front of Dutalia Supermarket, especially during peak activity hours. Therefore, mitigation measures are required, including regulating on-street parking, managing vehicle movements entering and exiting commercial areas, providing pedestrian facilities, and implementing traffic engineering strategies to improve the service level index toward more optimal conditions.
