Abstract

Ferns (Pteridophyta) are vascular plants that reproduce via spores and play a vital role in the ecosystem as soil protectors against erosion, humus formers, as well as ornamental and medicinal plants. This study aims to identify fern species and describe their habitat conditions in the Oenesu Waterfall area, Kupang Barat District, Kupang Regency. The research was conducted descriptively and exploratively using the cruise method and purposive sampling technique across three observation stations. The results identified 15 fern species from various families with epiphytic and terrestrial growth types, such as Adiantum philippense, Asplenium nidus, and Drynaria quercifolia. Abiotic factors influencing their presence include stable air temperatures (28°C), high soil moisture, soil pH ranging from 5.0 to 6.0, and low light intensity due to dense canopy cover. These conditions support the growth of various tropical fern species that thrive in shaded and humid environments. This study provides essential data for local biodiversity documentation and serves as a basis for conservation strategies and sustainable habitat management of fern species around the Oenesu Waterfall area.
