Abstract

Marriage practices within the Dawan indigenous community are embedded incomplexritual processes that function not only as social institutions but also as symbolic systems. One of the central elements in these practices is the Helketa tradition, which is articulatedthrough takanab oral discourse and mediated by customary spokespersons (AtoinMafefa). This study aims to examine the forms of presentation of takanab oral discourse intheHelketa marriage tradition and to analyze its symbolic meanings within the sociocultural context of Fafinesu Village, Insana Fafinesu District, North Central Timor Regency. Thisresearch employs a qualitative descriptive method with an ethnographic approach. Datawere collected through in-depth interviews with the village head, customary leaders, andcommunity members, complemented by participant observation and documentation. Thedata were analyzed interpretively to uncover patterns of meaning embedded in ritual speechand practice. The findings indicate that takanab oral discourse in the Helketatraditionfunctions as a sacred communicative medium that legitimizes customary marriageandsymbolically unites the families involved. The discourse embodies values of social cohesion, collective responsibility, and moral order. Its symbolic meanings include the legitimationof customary authority, the articulation of relationships between humans and ancestors, therestoration of social balance, the performative power of speech, and the af irmationof unityand peace. Structurally, takanab follows a formalized pattern consistent with the traditional linguistic conventions of Atoin Meto culture. Substantively, it reflects core social valuesof XI the Fafinesu community, such as loyalty (nek malule), family honor (baitual), and relational reconciliation (mafut nekaf). This study contributes to anthropological discoursebydemonstrating how ritual speech operates as a central mechanism for maintainingcultural continuity, ethical communication, and social harmony within indigenous marriage systems.
