Abstract

This research aims to analyze the influence of effective road width on the Passenger Car Equivalent (PCE) values for motorcycles and heavy vehicles. The case study was conducted on the Adi Sucipto road segment in Kupang City, spanning from the Oesapa Intersection to the Penfui Market. This location was selected due to its high traffic volume and its function as a primary access route to economic and educational centers. The research methodology applied is the Speed Method, referring to the 2023 Indonesian Road Capacity Guidelines (PKJI). Primary data were collected through field observations over five working days during morning, midday, and evening peak hours. Data collection techniques included road geometric surveys, vehicle dimension measurements, and vehicle speed surveys using the floating car method. The analysis results indicate a positive correlation between road dimensions and traffic flow performance. Road segments with wider effective widths provide greater lateral maneuvering space for drivers, thereby minimizing inter-vehicle conflicts and increasing average speeds. Conversely, on narrower segments, vehicle interactions become more intensive, leading to a decrease in operational speeds. The calculated PCE values for motorcycles range from 0.32 to 0.56, while PCE values for heavy vehicles range from 1.39 to 1.47 in the initial segments. This study concludes that road geometric characteristics, particularly effective width, are crucial factors in determining PCE values and overall road performance.
